Tolkien Thursday: Oliphaunts

So for my first post, I'm going to kick myself into gear with the creation of a random tradition! Yay! Cake for everyone (except the Third Estate, obviously).

Every Thursday, I'll be paying homage to the late & great J.R.R. Tolkien. We owe tons to this man when it comes to games. He essentially created his own genre, or at the very least set the standard. The Lord of Rings and The Hobbit have been read far and wide and have heavily influenced everything from role playing games to video games. In short, Tolkien is legendary. Hence, I shall raise my goblet to him weekly by posting something random about him, and you should too!

This week, I bring to you Legolas icing a Mumakil.

For those of you who don't know what an Oliphaunt/Mumakil is, this is what the LoTR wiki has to say about them:

"From within the jungle of Far Harad, the mumak emerged. To most cultures, the mumakil, or oliphaunts, were creatures of legend, as fabulous and fearsome as dragons, and to them were ascribed all kinds of strange powers. Oliphaunt was another name for them given to them by the Hobbits. Mumak resemble elephants, except they have four tusks, instead of two."

Yep. Oliphaunts are those bad mama-jammas that you remember from LoTR III: Return of the King, and, if you'll remember correctly, Legolas pulled off a crazy stunt and killed one with style. He must have been rolling "nat 20s" like it was nothing. Have another gander to refresh your memory:

There's just something about an elf killing a gigantic elephant that makes your day so much brighter, isn't there?

I hope you enjoyed Tolkien Thursday - feel free to leave comments in the box below.

good, Christian girls

I had an epiphany of sorts just now, and I felt the need to alert the world. As I was looking at a random girl's profile on facebook, it dawned on me as to why shifty guys would go to a fundamentalist type church to pick up girls. I always thought they must be crazy, seeing as I never thought to do that, and because it seems like way too much work (and subsequent pain) for such a small reward. I don't want to make any huge statements about this, but I do think it's true at least some of the time: Guys prey on girls in these kinds of churches because the girls are typically stupid/naive. Why is that? Well, their upbringing did it to them. The guy is kind of just seeking that thrill of having a girl fall madly in love with him, and the girls are easy targets since they might be attracted to a "sweet" guy that is a tad rebellious. Next thing they know, they're heartbroken and/or pregnant.

I could talk a long time on this subject, but for now it's good enough to simply say that I understand better now as to why in the world someone would do such. Of course, there's the thrill of controlling someone (causing them to be corrupted), but I don't see that as the main drive in most guys. There are many other reasons other than that even, that all come together to form a guy's drive. Girls being vulnerable is one of the more major reasons, though. Also, as you've already noticed, in the church's/family's/father's quest to keep his daughter pure, he accidentally crippled her and made her more likely to get in a bad situation than she normally would have been. But isn't that what always happens? It seems like every time I try to prevent something, my plans backfire and it happens anyway. It makes sense that we should be seeking to be content, and that winning isn't how hard you can hit, but how hard you can take a hit and keep going. This life is about perseverance over evil, not about avoiding it. As Robert Frost said, "The best way out is always through." Heed the mighty Frost's words, oh weakling! (and have a good rest of the day :) )

A Newnew Start

I've finally gotten back into blogging, and I have only three goals this time:
  1. Write consistently
  2. Connect with people
  3. Be genuine
It's not like this will ever be a famous blog or anything, so I should be able to do these three things. I'm just going to write about things that are on my mind and watch the evolution happen. Things that pique my interest, or thoughts that I need to get out in the open will all be here. Much of it will overlap into my hobbies or projects, but some of it won't. Let's make it a good run, shall we?
